Usually the success of a website is defined by how well it is designed. If your website is appealing and efficient, users will come back – and will buy from you. However, a poorly designed website is unlikely to hold visitors’ attention for more than a minute or two. If you want to give your website the benefit of strong design practices, check out the following tips.
Look at your site in many different browsers. What you’re seeing in one browser may not actually be what other people are seeing. Make changes to your site to make it look good on all popular browsers. In addition, ask friends and family to check out the site, too. You never know if another operating system makes a difference.
Make sure your webpages aren’t too long. You only get one chance to make a first impression, and if your most important content is “below the fold,” it may not even be read. If you have a lot of related content that needs to stay together, consider breaking it up into sections and adding links to each section.
Do not underestimate the value of a website that loads fast, with no slowdowns. Your visitors are more likely to lose interest in your website and leave the page if they have to wait for a few minutes before having access to the content.
Avoid creating user interface (UI) controls that mislead your visitors. These controls include elements, widgets and more that create an interactive experience, such as a link, drop-down list or button. You do not want to make visitors think that clicking on an underlined word or phrase for example, will lead to a new page if it is not actually linked to something else. When your visitors have expectations of something working a certain way and it does not, they are more likely to assume there is something wrong with your site and leave.
Avoid using pop-up advertising. Everyone hates getting pop-up after pop-up on a website. This often causes people to leave a site, meaning they never take the time to get to know your product. Stay away from those irritating ads and your visitors will be pleased. If the pop-ups are coming about because of your host, then now is the time to start shopping for a replacement.
If you want your site visitors to spend as much time as possible on your site, make text easy to read. One of the most common design mistakes is using graphic backgrounds with patterns or dark colors; combine this with equally dark text and you have a recipe for disaster. Unless the text is clear and easy to read, your site will not be a success.
A web design that is easy on the eyes, in addition to being easy to use, can make a big difference in the success of your website. Just a good web design can boost the traffic to your site significantly. The opposite is true for poor web design, it may discourage people from entering your traffic. Follow the web design advice you’ve just read to guarantee the success of your website.
