Web Design: Do It Like A Pro

Tired of working a 9-5 job for peanuts? If so, then web design might be a good alternative to that. When you know how to make sites, you can make them for yourself or others. Website design gives you the flexibility of being your own boss and make money.

Use JavaScript to include a custom font on your webpages. Libraries like Typekit and Google Web Fonts make it easy to include esoteric fonts on webpages, even if most visitors don’t have those fonts on their computers. It works by embedding the font itself into JavaScript so that it can be decoded by the client on the fly.

People don’t like to wait when they browse the Internet, so your pages need to load fast even on slow connections. Your visitors are more likely to lose interest in your website and leave the page if they have to wait for a few minutes before having access to the content.

You must create a website that is easily navigable to attract and keep traffic. Place your links so they can be found easily. Good menus make navigating your site much easier. Always post the links to your primary pages on every sub-page to keep visitors on your site.

Avoid using frames. Most sites have abandoned frames on their own as better alternatives have become available, but there are still sites out there that are trapped in 1996. Alternatives to navigational frames include fixed-position navigation panels, having navigation in multiple areas (e.g. left and bottom) or simplifying page structure so that navigational links are never far away.

Have a site map. These are useful to your clients and the search engines, as they give a detailed overview of your entire website. It can be a guide for viewers searching for a certain part of your site, and also allow you to keep track of its structure and layout.

To help your website visitors find their way home on your site, always include a link to your homepage on each page of your site. Having a home page link that is visible allows your reader to easily make their way back to starting point. If you do not have a home page link then your visitors might get frustrated and leave your site altogether.

Keep your topics separated. Separate topics to give each one its own page. This ensures that no one ends up confused and leaves as a result. Search engines will also have an easier task of ranking specific pages.

To help keep your site visitors happy, do not underline words. Underline words on the internet signifies that the word is a clickable link. If you have too many words on your pages that are underlined with being clickable links, then your visitors will be frustrated after continuously trying to click on them.

All of this information should help you design a better website. Just be sure to use all that you learned to the best of your ability and before you know it, you’ll be a web design pro.
